Ultimate Gaming Clan Interview

Please introduce your clan and yourselves.

Hi, I am Gudgin and this is my long time friend and co-founder of the [UGC] clan: Dragoncarp alias Lee and Jared. Together we founded the Ultimate Gaming Clan back in June 2003.

What are your goals in the clan ranking list?

We originally set up the clan for multi gaming, but found Vietcong to be the most popular with recruiting members. So we decided to concentrate our efforts solely on Vietcong.

We have played a total of 20 matches on the ClanBase CTF ladder. Winning 11, losing 9.

We are currently hibernating while we recruit more players and train very hard. We are making a comeback shortly once we have time to get as a team with our new recruits.

We would obviously like our clan to be successful, but having fun is our key goal.

What has been the toughest match in your clan career?

Our ClanBase match against "[BWR] Beware" was our most enjoyable and toughest match. We were so evenly balanced, it was a close game. We were victorious 8-6 on the Stream and NVA Base maps. Post match reports, we all said that it was our best game and all enjoyed it.

How often do you practice and how is it done?

We attend practice twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We practice on the maps that we are going to play in our match at the weekend. So on Tuesdays we practice on one map and on Thursdays the other for at least two hours.
It is important for us not to take it too seriously or we will lose the fun element.

How did your clan start with Vietcong?

Jared and I first got hold of a copy of the demo from the PCGamer magazine (whilst we were on a 56K modem) and instantly took a liking to its unique aiming system and environments.
We played very regularly, perhaps too much.

Eventually we joined the [MUU] clan lead by Vindi and Tyreal of www.MUU-clan.co.uk.
Although we played very regularly with [MUU] and held our own on the 56K modem, we never played competitively with them. With the event of broadband for us, we decided it was time to start our own clan.
We both had our ideas about the clan; I wanted to play Vietcong only as [1stRecon], the first soldiers who were sent into Vietnam, but Jared had much bigger ideas; He suggested that we should play a host of games and run the clans for them all, so we could change between them and never get bored. But, as you can see now, we dropped the other games because we enjoy Vietcong, and now Vietcong Fist Alpha, so much.

Our longest standing member is Snakeeyes from the [MUU] clan who lead our clan as a captain for some time.
Before even playing a match as a clan, Lee and I were already becoming very popular in the Vietcong community for our ideas on how to bring fair play to the game.
We came up with the idea of TAGA (Teamwork Assisted Gameplay Association – www.TAGA.tk). This originally meant to promote team play, but kind of moved on to promote not only teamwork but fair play. We put the idea to a few well known clans; like The Edge and K2 - they loved the idea and offered as much help as we wanted.

We have had members from all over the globe, but decided to keep the clan for the United Kingdom only, because of communication and ping issues.

Then during an MSN Messenger conversation, we were introduced to Jedimaster of VietcongNet. He loved the idea and came in as a partner and used his fan site to promote TAGA. He was so impressed with what we were trying to do with the Vietcong community that he even joined our clan. Although that guy never stops working on promoting Vietcong, so he does not always have the time to play as much as he would like to.

What is the best thing you like about Vietcong?

The best things for me about Vietcong are the open maps which first drew me to the game with the Stream multiplayer demo. I played other first person shooters and found maps were enclosed around cities with lots of buildings. I find jungle foliage much more interesting to play in. The game is easy to get into with controls that are easy to configure and not too demanding like other games, which have numerous keys that I never used.

The graphics and sounds are amazing, and to be honest, if it was still the v0.96 Stream multiplayer demo that I started on, I would still be playing it today. I think I racked up over 300 hours on that demo alone.

I also like the fact that Vietcong is pretty much the best balanced game yet to be released.

What is the worst thing about Vietcong in your opinions?

I do not think that the FPS or lag issues are anywhere as bad as people say, but I have to admit that there are some flaws in the game;

Things like pausing when players spawn should be ironed out. But the developer support for the game is about the best we have ever seen, so things will get better and better.

I also dislike the team wounding in terms of public playing. You spawn and head off towards the enemies base only to have another player shoot you once in the back to half your health before you even meet an enemy. Some are of course accidental, but others are so blatant.

We would like to thank the Ultimate Gaming Clan [UGC] for joining the interview.
