Vietcong Clan Kronach Interview

Please introduce your clan and yourselves.

We are one of the oldest German Vietcong clans, and our headquarters are near the Czech Republican border in north Bavaria.

Our soldiers joined us from everywhere in Germany to fight in the jungle. Do not ask who we are or what we are; whenever you are somewhere in Nam' with a gun in your hand, you will find us.
Better watch out or we will find you!

What are your goals in the clan ranking list?

We would obviously like to be the best in the league, but when you have gone through the hell of Vietnam, you are just happy to be alive. We proceed through the fights and do our best not to get ranked as the last.

What has been the toughest match in your clan career?

The first contact we had with enemy troops has been the toughest ever;
While trying to capture all the enemy flags in the NVA Base, we fought hard to keep our position against the soldiers of -=GTF=-, but even the toughest of us had to retreat. At the next attack, they tried to destroy us at the Halong Port, but we succeeded with fighting back. It was hard, but we eliminated them in a powerful assault team game (ATG). If you are interested, you can have a look here for screenshots and a couple of German comments. The GTF clan died in August 2003. We would like to greet all the members of GTF who were a part of our big fight.

Although there was no winner in the match, there was a victory for both sides because it was about two hours of excellent playing.

How often do you practice and how is it done?

Every second of the terrible days in the Vietnamese jungle is like training for us. There are lots of times where the enemy forces proceed to our position and attack hard, and when we know that a hard challenge is coming, we travel to the locations of the fight and really practice hard so that we can be better than them.

How did your clan start with Vietcong?

In the autumn of 2002, a couple of soldiers were called back from their mission with the Soldiers of Fortune from the fights with the Delta Forces and from the monster hunting in the Unreal worlds. Even the terrorists and their opponents had to go in the jungle to fight in Vietnam.

A demo called Vietcong was running around the Internet.
From the second we stepped on the grounds of Vietnam, we were interested, infected, addicted!

We have almost only played Vietcong since the demo was released. Our clan grew with the game. On the 27th of December 2002 we registered the domains www.vietcong-clan.de and www.vietcongclan.de. That date was our clan's birth. The clan was named "Vietcong Clan Kronach" because Kronach is the city where it all started. At the beginning, we started a small dedicated server, which was run by a Celeron 600MHz machine with 512 MB Ram and a home DSL connection. This meant that I had to stop listening to the web radio and stop downloading from the Internet.

It was like Christmas when PTERODON released the first dedicated server program.

In July 2003, we assembled a great Windows machine, which is our clan server to this day. It has always been our goal to keep the community alive, so we always invite people to play at one of our three servers, running on a 2800+ AMD machine with 1 GB Ram and a 100 MBit connection to a 6.3 GBit backbone.

Has the clan always been Vietcong only?

As I said in the previous answer, we are addicted to the game.
Sometimes we play other games, but Vietcong is still our favourite.

What is the best thing you like about Vietcong?

It is a great gaming experience to walk through the jungle of Vietnam with your gun swirling in your hand. The great graphical ambience and the realistic weapons make the gameplay perfect. Sometimes you can even taste the mud you are crawling through and feel the mosquitoes that are biting you. No other game has delivered the feeling of Vietnam as well as Vietcong has.

Another great thing is that you have to switch between being powerful and attacking to a defensive fighting. There are so many opportunities; you either rush the enemy or quietly set traps and plan ambushes on the opponents. A headshot will cause an immediate kill, but a hit on your leg gives you the chance to make the match a victory.

There are too many great things about Vietcong to write down here. But everybody who likes Vietcong will know what we mean.

What is the worst thing about Vietcong in your opinions?

Every medal has two sides; the worst thing about the game is the online lag. It is hard when you fire a whole magazine of bullets in your enemies face for then to see the enemy turn around and kill you with one shot. We know when we miss our targets, so our aiming is not the problem.

The cheats can be annoying, and sometimes you do not even know if a player is cheating or not. This is probably caused by the game engine where you sometimes see a player hanging in the air or stick through the ground. A reset of the machine usually fixes the problem, though.

Vietcong needs a lot of computer resources; even our dedicated clan server uses all of the available CPU power. The fast physical ram is not used as much as the slower virtual ram and only 15-25% of the network connection is used.

But we always look forward to the bug fixes and improvements, which are delivered by the patches and we will do everything we can to help fixing these.

We would like to thank Vietcong Clan Kronach [VCK] for joining the interview.
