Strike Force Interview
Please introduce your clan and yourselves.
We are members of the Strike Force =SFX= clan, which is in our opinion the hardest working Vietcong clan.
What are your goals in the clan ranking list?
Our goal is to be the best we possibly can be, whilst having as much fun as we can.
What has been the toughest match in your clan career?
Our toughest match was probably against the AE clan. We lost the match 32-0, although it was one of the best matches we had ever played! Considering the AE clan has beaten other clans 100-0 or more, we did pretty well.
We learned a great deal from that war, and we got some nice group photos with them.
How often do you practice and how is it done?
The =SFX= clan members train every Monday and Friday from 20:00 PM till late night, although we all play most days, averaging 20-30 hours of playing time most weeks.
We are lucky to have a couple of veteran Vietcong members in our clan who have gained a lot of multiplayer gaming knowledge and experience to share with the other clan members. These guys usually run our training sessions.
When we practice, we work on team work, developing a style of play that suits us as well as learning the multiplayer maps, and above all having a good time doing it.
How did your clan start with Vietcong?
I originally joined my first multiplayer clan and got to experience Vietcong with a team. After that, I got hooked. Unfortunately, the clan lacked of organisation, and members missed the training, clan matches, etc. quite often.
Eventually, the clan split up, and everyone went their separate ways (although we still keep in touch). Some members joined other game clans, whilst a few of us started our own Vietcong clan named Strike Force =SFX=.
We have a reputation of playing fair clan matches and for having a lot of fun. A lot of people who heard of our reputation have even contacted us about joining our clan.
Additionally, we have a 24 player Vietcong server sponsored by clanlife.com, which is paid for 12 months, and is one of the fastest servers in the United Kingdom.
So people know that we are here to stay, and that we take Vietcong seriously, even though we have fun!
How did you start with creating multiplayer maps?
I have been creating maps since the days of the first Doom, and have also made maps for the most first person shooter titles, and even a few other games like Stronghold Crusader and Command and Conquer.
My brother introduced me to Vietcong last year, and since then, I was addicted. So when the announcement of Vietcong Fist Alpha was published, in which there was written that an exclusive Ptero-Engine-II editor would be included, I was quite excited.
When I received the Ptero-Engine-II editor and the included plug-ins, I started working on my first Vietcong multiplayer map, which was named "=SFX= Bootcamp". I worked with my clan to create and test the multiplayer map, and when I published it at the PTERO.biz network, the map stayed at the top 10 most popular user-created multiplayer maps for three months.
Seeing as this multiplayer map was not perfect, I started working on a new multiplayer map for Vietcong named "=SFX= The Old Church", which was one of the first multiplayer maps that had the "co-operative (COOP)" game type included.
Since then, I have been working on more multiplayer maps, which are being released soon, or have already been published.
Do you have any goals when creating multiplayer maps?
It is important for us to keep the balancing of the multiplayer map good (especially in game types like "capture the flag (CTF)", "assault team game (ATG)" and "deathmatch (DM)"). We usually also take some ideas from good Vietnam War movies. The atmosphere is extremely important. If you have played the "=SFX= The Old Church" multiplayer map, you will know what I mean. Another thing, which is quite important, is the realism of our multiplayer maps. We want to recreate the 1960s and 1970s, so that you feel like being a part of the Vietnam War.
We try to ensure that this continuity is carried through our multiplayer maps. And we are actually getting better at this with each multiplayer map we release.
Can you tell us a bit about your forthcoming multiplayer map "Devils Bridge"?
This multiplayer map was originally a concept developed by PTERODON. Jarek Kolar (producer, PTERODON) was kind enough to give it to us, so that we could practice making multiplayer maps. After looking at the 3D sketches and some architect drawings of wooden bridges, I started working...
To be honest, the original bridge concept was of a Viet Cong construction yard, but I wanted to make this more of a US Army type of multiplayer map than a Viet Cong. In my head, I envisioned this bridge was a major crossing point for US Army supplies, and would therefore be a great target for the North Vietnamese army (NVA). The Viet Cong village would provide cover for the NVA whilst rocks and containers on the other side would provide a camp for the US Army.
You can check it out for yourselves, as we have now released it as a public beta multiplayer map. We ran into some technical difficulties with the tactical map, and so far we have been unable to fix it. Maybe someone out there can help?
What is the best thing you like about Vietcong?
That is a tough question. There are so many factors to consider. Personally, I got to say that the aim feature is the greatest thing about Vietcong.
Some of the other Strike Force =SFX= members had this to say:
=SFX= Savage Beast - "The online game play."
=SFX= Fade to Black - "The realism is outstanding!"
=SFX= Andyman - "The attention to detail!"
=SFX= Mofo - "Shooting things =p"
=SFX= Version2 - "Tactics, tactics, tactics!"
What is the worst thing about Vietcong in your opinions?
Some people say that the worst thing about Vietcong is the cheats, but I personally think that it has to be the lag! Sorry to say this, but not only does it create the usual problems of jerky gaming, it also opens a huge door into the realm of cheating. What I mean is that if someone appears to fly across the room, you call him a cheater, but you are in fact just experiencing lag. The multiplayer session missed the middle part where the player ran across the floor, and just moved from one place to the other, and so it looks like they fly, or run through a wall. The worst thing is that you cannot do a lot about the lag, and a lot of people get called cheaters when they are not. So although cheaters exist, I have to say that the lag is the worst thing about Vietcong. Cheating stops pretty quickly when HradBa is updated, but the lag continues.
Some of the other Strike Force =SFX= members had this to say:
=SFX= Version2 - "Getting stuck on objects, walls, etc., and having to self destruct!"
=SFX= Savage Beast - "Running out of bullets when I am in a top spot!"
=SFX= Mofo - "The M-60 sight is confusing."
=SFX= Leon - "The "co-operative (COOP)" cheat kick bug!"
=SFX=MrsFre@k - "Being the only girl in the =SFX= clan."
Finally, we just wanted to take this opportunity to thank PTERODON for bringing us such a great game, and just like you guys, we also want to give special thanks to our partners, parents and all others who understand, support and encourage us.
Thank you very much.
